As a real estate agent in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley, I’m often reminded of how crucial a comfortable home is to our well-being. But today, I want to shift the focus from buying homes to supporting a noble cause that’s close to my heart: Amy’s Place.
Amy’s Place is not just a temporary housing facility; it's a sanctuary of hope and compassion for adult patients undergoing medical treatment and their caregivers. Founded by Amy Torrez, this nonprofit organization stems from a deeply personal experience. In 2000, Amy’s father was diagnosed with lymphoma, and during his treatment in Houston, Texas, a local church provided fully furnished apartments for patients and their families. This support allowed Amy to rest, recharge, and emotionally cope in a private, home-like setting, and it greatly influenced her vision for Amy’s Place.
Amy’s journey didn’t end with her father’s passing. She returned to Indiana and, driven by the same spirit of generosity she experienced, started a nonprofit in 2015. Fast forward to October 2023, and Amy found herself in Southern California, where the need for temporary housing was even greater. Now, Amy’s Place provides this essential service to patients and their caregivers who travel to the San Gabriel Valley area for treatments, including those from City of Hope and USC Arcadia Hospital.
In 2023 alone, approximately 850 families sought cancer support resources in the San Gabriel Valley. Of these families, nearly 40% resided outside the area, highlighting the urgent need for accessible temporary housing. At Amy’s Place, there are no income qualifications, and patients can stay for a modest donation of $25 per night. This minimal cost ensures that financial stress doesn’t compound the emotional toll of undergoing treatment.
By offering a holistic approach to patient care, Amy’s Place significantly enhances recovery chances by alleviating financial and emotional burdens. The home-like environment enables patients to feel normal and caregivers to recharge, ultimately improving the overall well-being of both.
As a real estate agent, I understand the importance of a supportive and nurturing environment. That’s why I’m passionate about promoting Amy’s Place. By donating or volunteering, we can all contribute to creating a sanctuary for those who need it most during challenging times.
Join me in supporting Amy’s Place. Let’s make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their caregivers by providing them with the comfort and compassion they deserve.
